2013 Fall Beach Ride
Saturday, November 2nd, 2013
Rain or Shine
Location: Little Island Park / Sandbridge Beach
Start Time: 10:00 am (Gates open at 8:00 am)
Ride Route: Two mile escorted course up and down
scenic Sandbridge Beach.
The Friends of VBMP work
throughout the year to raise money for the VBMP. These funds provide the officers and their horses with “extra”
things that the city cannot provide such as updated training gear, saddles and trips to the Annual Police Equestrian Competition.
History: In 1984, a group of concerned citizens (The Friends) interested
in having a mounted patrol unit in their city, met with the Chief of Police,
Charles Wall. Chief Wall agreed that their idea would improve ocean front
policing; however, funding the program through the city would be difficult to
obtain. The Friends did not let this news dampen their spirits; in fact, it
inspired The Friends to come up with other alternatives. The Friends began
looking for other citizens in Virginia Beach to join their cause, and assist in
establishing a Mounted Patrol. The growing group of Friends acquired horses,
tack, boarding and much more.
In 1985, the efforts and desires of
The Friends of the Virginia Beach Mounted Patrol assisted in establishing the
first Mounted Patrol. The unit consisted of six officers and one sergeant.
So "giddy up" and come witness the mounted
patrol ride along Sandbridge Beach for yourself. We
guarantee... you won't be disappointed!
