The Magic of Virginia Beach

Ahhh… a beach vacation at last!  After all the planning and anticipation, you’ve finally arrived to Virginia Beach, VA.  Now comes the hard part…. what to do first?  Of course, the shoes are the first things to go… and the kids have already hit the beach!  But then it starts.  Decisions… decisions…  With miles of sand, surf, activities, and restaurants to choose from, you could literally fill an itinerary several times over.

Looking for fun? Virginia Beach’s famous oceanfront boardwalk is overflowing with excitement from shops… to restaurants… to music and entertainment.  Vacationers love to stroll, jog, bike, or skate along the boardwalk as they take in the award-winning landscaping sprinkled with teak benches, whimsical bigger-than-life art sculptures, colorful flags, and, of course, the famous Norwegian Lady statue as she gazes out into the horizon.  During the summer, Atlantic Avenue turns into “Beach Street USA” and transforms itself into a little bit of Key West / Mardi Gras with professional musicians, jugglers, as well as live bands and entertainment at the 5th,17th, 24th, 31st St stages.  Whether there’s a surfing championship, art show, sandcastle contest, major headliner concerts, or a holiday festival going on… everyday is a special on the boardwalk!

As you venture out into the city, there are always major events scheduled at the Virginia Beach Pavilion, the Farm Bureau Live Virginia Beach Amphitheater, or the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia.  The kids will love exploring the wonders of nature at the Virginia Museum and Marine Science Center, which is one of the Top Ten aquariums in the country. This interactive museum boasts 800,000-gallons of aquariums filled with river otters, sharks, stingrays, sea turtles, as well as an outdoor aviary and salt marsh preserve with nature trails.  For anglers of all ages, you can choose from several piers throughout the city or consider chartering a boat for a day of seafaring adventure!  Or take a guided dolphin or whale watching boat tour and come face-to-face with these magnificent creatures!  Perhaps a few rounds of golf is your idea of a perfect vacation. Virginia Beach offers nearly 30 top-notch courses to keep golfers well challenged.

Looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the resort area?  Venture to the southern portion of Virginia Beach where you’ll discover not only miles of picturesque horse farms, and fields of fresh fruit and vegetables, you’ll also discover the family-friendly and quaint coastal community of Sandbridge Beach.  Sandbridge is a secluded five mile beach… just a few blocks wide, with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the calm Back Bay waters on the other.  Vacationers love this non-commercial family beach, which is perfect for family vacations in a more low-key setting.  Siebert Realty is the largest and oldest resort rental company in Sandbridge offering almost 400 beach home and condo rentals.

The Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge borders the southern end of Sandbridge and is a must see as it is deemed one of the east coasts’ most beautiful, unspoiled destinations.  Visitors can observe wildlife in their natural habitats along various hike/bike trails or you can now travel through the refuge via electric trams to False Cape State Park.  7,700 gorgeous acres of beach, dunes, woodland and marsh are waiting to be explored!

Of course, when it comes down to it… Virginia Beach is all about “the beach”.  Our beautiful city offers the perfect backdrop to simply slow down, relax, and take in the breathtaking Atlantic vistas.  It’s funny… but often it’s none of the exciting activities that will linger in your memory once your vacation ends.  You’ll find yourself reminiscing of a special place where the living was easy… where the locals were friendly… where you fell in love with the aroma of salt air and the sounds of gulls calling overhead.  You’ll recall a magical place where a simple stroll along the shore helped to wash away everyday problems and put your life back into its proper perspective.  It’s those quiet moments that rejuvenate the soul and keep our vacationers returning year after year.

Why Travelers Chose Vacation Rentals

Here are the top reasons name by leisure travelers for choosing vacation rentals on trips, according to the Ypartnership / Harrison Group:

  • Value for the price:   More than nine in 10 travelers rate value as the main reason they’ll select vacation rentals on trips. They often provide significant cost savings versus other lodging options, also offering inherent values that remain unmatched.
  • Privacy:   Most travelers also enjoy a sense of privacy and comfort, with 89% having named this as a primary motivator. Private homes and condos alike represent a true retreat for most guests.
  • Full kitchen facilities:  Nearly nine in 10 travelers choose vacation rentals for access to fully equipped kitchens, which offer the freedom to prepare meals, store snacks/leftovers, or visit local markets for fresh, regional ingredients.
  • More space overall:  Like a true home away from home, vacation rentals often provide from 1,000 to more than 4,000 sq. ft. of space. 86 percent of travelers agree this is a key reason to rent.
  • Amenities:  This is a top consideration for 85 percent of travelers, as guests today find familiarities like bath toiletries, fresh linens and added amenities like game rooms, private swimming pools, fireplaces, in-home movie theatres with free DVD rentals or more, especially when staying with a professional property manager.
  • Extra bedrooms:   Fully seven in 10 travelers find multiple bedrooms to be a top vacation rental motivator. Some three-bedroom properties sleep up to eight guests versus just one or two, also offering room to unwind and enjoy varying bedtimes.
  • Family “togethering:”  68 percent of travelers say they’ll choose vacation rentals for the experience itself – growing closer by enjoying quality time together underneath one roof. For many, it’s this atmosphere that sets vacation rentals apart.

A Tribute to Rock & Roll
June 22 - June 24, 2012
“Sandstock” started out as a beach-inspired variation on “Woodstock.” Now a tribute to Rock & Roll, Sandstock celebrates the music of the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s that “rocked our world!” National and local tribute artists who run the gamut and cover performers like Led Zeppelin to Queen to Journey crank out hit after hit on multiple stages at the Virginia Beach oceanfront. Even “The King” himself gets in on the act with special tribute shows.

To set the stage, parks are decorated. Thrill to the “Disco Divas” of the 70’s, and the “big hair” rockers of the 80’s!   To electrify the night, a laser light show explodes on a giant screen on the beach to the music of bands like Pink Floyd! Don't miss this fantastic “blast from the past!”

Boardwalk Art Show

June 14 - 17, 2012

The Boardwalk Art Show and Festival, presented by SunTrust, is one of the oldest and best outdoor fine art shows on the Eastern seaboard, and this year will mark our 57th year. For more info, visit www.boardwalkshow.com.
The show is consistently ranked in Sunshine Artist Magazine’s Top 50 fine art Shows. With an average attendance each year or more than 200,000, this four-day festival is one of the most popular in Virginia, attracting collectors and artists from across the nation. The show runs along the Virginia Beach boardwalk from 17th Street to 32nd Street, overlooking the sandy beach and Atlantic Ocean.

The History of Boardwalk Art Show
In 1952, a small group of artists presented an outdoor art show at the boardwalk, with the proceeds benefiting a fellow artist who had fallen ill. Those artists later formed an organization which is today the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). In 1956, the first official Boardwalk Art Show was held. Top prize was $25 and 104 artists participated. Today, Best in show wins $10,000 and the Boardwalk show is ranked as on of the top 100 outdoor art shows in the country.
The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art is a non-profit, non-collecting institution, which means the artwork in the galleries changes every 3-4 months. MOCA's mission is to promote exploration and understanding of the significant art of our time. So while you won't see Old Masters, you're guaranteed to see something cutting edge and different each time you visit! MOCA also offers a variety of educational programs and classes for the community.

North American
Sand Soccer Championship
June 8 - 10, 2012

Be it as one of NASSC's 107,000 returning sand soccer "veteran's", or perhaps a newcomer to this site in search information on this emerging beach sports craze, welcome to the exciting world of soccer on the sand and beautiful Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA! If you enjoy sun, sand and surf with your soccer - this IS the place... and get ready for Ultimate Beach Ball! This tournament is the globe’s premier single-weekend sand soccer festival as nearly 10,000 players will rock the Virginia Beach oceanfront June 8 - 10 when the
Championships returns to one of the nation’s top resort cities.

You’ll find colorful international teams parading to the sound on conga drums enroute incredible U.S. OPEN Pro/Am matches, with cash prizes at stake; hundreds of youth teams aged 9 thru 19 battling on the beaches, men’s and women’s single gender squads, college teams, and even "corporate-coed" competitors from businesses and military organizations promoting health and fitness. The game, played on 25-35 or 30-40 yard grids, is 5v5 and fast-paced, with limited dribblin’ and laser shots on goal. Never fear, however, as brackets are seeded to support all levels of play - from the beginner to the most professional. Much like beach volleyball, sand soccer‘s rules are easy to pick up. Uniforms for this beach bash are "anything-goes", just about like the game itself...

This "Grand Prix" of international amateur beach soccer events is hard to miss and attracts teams from nearly 20 states and as far away as Germany, Brazil, Norway’s rocky seacoasts and the wilds of Canada's Northwest Territories. The Championships are staged over 20 full City blocks of prime oceanfront real estate, on over mile and a half of white sand - against a backdrop of diving gulls, banners waving in stiff ocean breezes, thousands of Boardwalk bedazzled spectators, live music and great food. Meanwhile, surf’s up just a few steps from the soccer action and, when day is done, most participants and fans head out to area’s unbelievable lineup of region entertainment, spotlighted in our "Attractions" click.

The Hampton Roads Soccer Council (HRSC), and its several member clubs, are your hosts for the tournament weekend and plan year-round to ensure a guaranteed sand-blast. Consisting of the Virginia Beach Rush, the Southeastern Virginia Women’s Soccer Associations, and Beach FC travel soccer organizations, HRSC has staged the Championships since 1994 to generate revenues for its premier 75-acre Soccer Complex. Numerous national and regional sponsors and advertisers graciously support the festival. New corporate teammates are always welcomed and can receive tournament info using the below contact points.
Conventional outdoor soccer enthusiasts make up the bulk of competition. Once you’ve experienced soccer in the sand, you’re hooked big-time and a huge percentage of players and families return year after year to make the North American Sand Soccer Championships their "Summer Kickoff", or a reward for a just-completed school year or Spring soccer campaign.
Want more info? Then click thru this site and see what participants have said over the years about this fantastic festival.

The tournament is first come-first in by date of receipt of application and entry fee. The single exception is the Pro/Am division where entry is based on team composition and history and additional entry material is forwarded by the tournament to those Pro/Am teams showing interest in entering the men's "U.S. OPEN".
