During WWII, dances were arranged and held in airplane hangars as fundraisers for the war effort. Take a step back in time and join us for this great museum event.

Need help on the dance floor?
Swing Virginia members will be attending the event to teach the vintage styles of swing dance. This local group teaches several styles including lindy hop, east coast swing, the jitterbug, and more! http://www.swingvirginia.com

The Military Aviation Museum is home to one of the largest private collections of World War One and World War Two era military aircraft in the world. Each has been beautifully restored to its prior military condition, using original parts whenever possible. Most of the planes are airworthy and flown at the museum during flight demonstrations and at air shows throughout the year.

The museum is constantly growing as they add new aircraft and aviation-related ground equipment to their collection. Come often and share their love for military aviation history. Take a personal tour with one of the many volunteer docents who are well-versed in the personal history of each aircraft.  Attend monthly hangar talks, semi-annual air shows, and many other special events throughout the year.

Andy Warhol Portraits

Andy Warhol:  Portraits
Ends August 19, 2012

The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) presents Andy Warhol: Portraits, featuring original works from the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. This notoriously private artist is revealed in the company he keeps. Including screenprints, drawings, paintings, Polaroids, and vintage family photos this exhibition explores the phenomenon that is Warhol’s work on a deeply personal level.

Andy Warhol: Portraits includes more than 130 portraits produced by Warhol from the 1940s to the 1980s. This exhibition contains portraits of Warhol in his youth, a reproduction of Warhol's first celebrity autograph (from Shirley Temple in 1941), early portrait drawings from the 1940s, samples of Warhol's commercial work from the 1950s, movie star portraits from the 1960s, and more than 100 portrait paintings from the 1970s and 1980s. The most comprehensive exhibition of portraiture by Warhol, this show debuted at the Warhol Museum in Spring 2010 and is exhibiting at MOCA for the first time in the US since then.

Boardwalk Art Show

June 14 - 17, 2012

The Boardwalk Art Show and Festival, presented by SunTrust, is one of the oldest and best outdoor fine art shows on the Eastern seaboard, and this year will mark our 57th year. For more info, visit www.boardwalkshow.com.
The show is consistently ranked in Sunshine Artist Magazine’s Top 50 fine art Shows. With an average attendance each year or more than 200,000, this four-day festival is one of the most popular in Virginia, attracting collectors and artists from across the nation. The show runs along the Virginia Beach boardwalk from 17th Street to 32nd Street, overlooking the sandy beach and Atlantic Ocean.

The History of Boardwalk Art Show
In 1952, a small group of artists presented an outdoor art show at the boardwalk, with the proceeds benefiting a fellow artist who had fallen ill. Those artists later formed an organization which is today the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). In 1956, the first official Boardwalk Art Show was held. Top prize was $25 and 104 artists participated. Today, Best in show wins $10,000 and the Boardwalk show is ranked as on of the top 100 outdoor art shows in the country.
The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art is a non-profit, non-collecting institution, which means the artwork in the galleries changes every 3-4 months. MOCA's mission is to promote exploration and understanding of the significant art of our time. So while you won't see Old Masters, you're guaranteed to see something cutting edge and different each time you visit! MOCA also offers a variety of educational programs and classes for the community.
